What Is a Psychological Assessment?

Children, adolescents, and young adults first visit us at Reframe because there are concerns about their functioning and how they feel. They may be having problems academically, behaviorally, socially, or emotionally. The first step to improving functioning is often a comprehensive psychological assessment.

The assessment is geared toward understanding strengths and needs, past and current functioning, and factors that may be limiting the individual’s current functioning. During the assessment, information from multiple sources is combined to achieve a greater understanding of the individual.

After we have a better understanding, we set out a treatment plan. We work with the individual, youth and their parent(s) to reduce symptoms and improve overall functioning through treatment. We employ empirically supported treatment methods but rely heavily on Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT), individualized treatment, and a family approach to help bring about positive changes in the lives of children, adolescents, adults, and families. The focus, length, and frequency of intervention vary depending on the person’s individual needs and current functioning.

  • Academic or school anxiety: school refusal, school avoidance, test anxiety
  • Acute Stress Disorder: severe anxiety associated with extreme stressor

  • Agoraphobia: avoidance of places that could cause panic reactions
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder: “Worry Wart”; constantly worries or asks for reassurance

  • Selective Mutism: inability to speak in certain situations, commonly school
  • Separation Anxiety Disorder: avoids age-appropriate separations from parents
  • Sleep Anxiety and difficulties: disruptive sleep patterns
  • Social Phobia: extreme anxiety in social situations due to fear of being judged
